UNGermany is reshaping renewable energy with a suitcase-sized micro-hydropower station that can turn a flowing stream into a continuous source of electricity. Designed for off-grid use, this portable system offers an environmentally friendly alternative that requires minimal installation and can operate for years with very little maintenance.
Developed by the Munich-based startup Smart Hydro Power, the compact generator is intended for decentralized household and village-scale power supply. It can be deployed in streams with relatively shallow water, making it especially suitable for remote regions or areas affected by natural disasters where conventional infrastructure is unavailable.
The system works on a straightforward kinetic principle. A small turbine captures the energy of moving water without the need for dams or large construction projects that can disrupt ecosystems. Unlike solar or wind power, the unit produces electricity around the clock, as flowing water provides a constant and predictable energy source.
Despite its small size, a single unit can deliver several kilowatts of power, enough to supply multiple households or small facilities such as lodges or research stations. TH3 months of building in 90 seconds…
It’s hard to capture content when there’s cob on your hands, but this will give you an idea of the process! Not pictured is the sheer amount of repetition that is building - we made, moved, shaped and plastered around 110,000 lbs of mud and many tons of rock and timber. Simon says cob is “like going to the gym, but you get a house at the end.” It makes me realize how many of our modern practices are just recreating what a natural lifestyle provides everyday. It was hard work but we come out the other side stronger, smarter, prouder, humbler. More connected to ourselves, each other, our natural resources, our shelters.
