ALIf you ever venture out to eastern Oregon, the Painted Hills are a must-see and honestly, they don’t even look real. The hills are layered with crazy colors deep reds, soft yellows, and golds that shift depending on the light and type of weather.
They’re part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, and while they’re not huge, the vibe is totally surreal and unique. There are a few easy short trails, and golden hour is amazing. Bring water, your camera, and a wide-angle lens if you’ve got one.
It’s remote, but totally worth the drive if you love weird, beautiful landscapes that feel untouched and a little mysterious.

The Painted Hills are located in Central Oregon, about an hour and a half from Bend, Oregon - the closest major town with an airport.
This area is SO worth seeing as it is such a contrast to the Oregon most people know - it truly feels like you are in Utah or Arizona, even Peru… definitely not Oregon!!
Here is everything to know about visiting the park:
🚗 The Painted Hills is one of three “units” inside John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The Painted Hills area is very small and can be explored in a day.
🥾 Most hiking trails are short - we loved the Red Scar Knoll Trail and Painted Cove Trail (both 0.3-0.5 miles). If you are up for a longer hike, Carol Rim is beautiful and is 1.6 miles.
👀 If you don’t want to hike, drive up to the Painted Hills Overlook! This is the best place for a sunset!
🗺️ You will have NO service out here so make sure to download maps prior to your visit.
🏕️ We recommend camping since this place is fairly remote, there are quite a few BLM spots nearby or campgrounds a short drive away.
🐾 All of the trails and places in this park are dog-friendly!
☀️ The best time of year to visit is the spring or fall - this place can be very hot in the summer!
‼️‼️ If you visit DO NOT touch or climb on these fragile hills. These hills cannot be reformed and once trampled on, as you can see in some of the clips, the marks remain there. Respect this beautiful place 💛
