PRThis diphthong is probably the one that learners of English find hardest to get right.
It starts in a mid-central position like a relatively open schwa, and then closes to a slightly back position that can be a little rounded.
The mistake a lot of learners make is to round the lips from the beginning of the sound as if it were a short /ɒ/ sound.
The spellings might cause this - NO is diphthong /əʊ/ whereas NOT is monophthong /ɒ/.
And it can be confused with other monophthongs, ZONE is this diphthong whereas NONE is monophthong /ʌ/.
So this is a sound that normally needs to be learnt and practised, both in terms of mouth position, and its spellings/words.

Phonemic Awareness! These skills are crucial to your child’s success in reading and writing. A few things to note:
👂🏻 When segmenting first, middle, or last sounds, try putting extra emphasis on the sound you’re asking for! Eventually they will master the skill without this emphasis, but it’s a good way to help them HEAR it at first.
👂🏻When rhyming, “nonsense words” (made-up words) are accepted and even encouraged! If it rhymes, it counts!
👂🏻 When blending or segmenting three sounds, use 3 fingers as a visual (see my example). I also give “hints” in the form of mouthing the sound if he gets stuck when segmenting.
You don’t have to be a homeschool mama to practice these at home. They are standardized test questions in kindergarten— *you’re welcome😉*

MSThis multi-sensory activity is a great tool to help students who are having difficulty with blending phonemes. To make them grab three packs of streamers from the party spot at your favorite store. Cut the streamers into strips and tie the pieces together. Teach and model how the tool is used and then give one to each of your students so they can practice blending with you! Happy reading!
