The Power of Masking Pt. 11 🌋 In landscapes like this, the challenge is balancing the dramatic light with the shadowed areas so the viewer’s eye follows the scene naturally. I used radial gradients to soften the highlights where the sun breaks through the clouds, while also lifting detail in the shadowed fields below. Linear gradients were added in the sky and in the foreground to subtly draw attention to the crater. Finally, I used selective dodging and burning to help emphasize the layers of the landscape, and guide the viewer through the image. It’s typically a build up of small adjustments like these that bring out the depth and scale of a scene while keeping the atmosphere true to how it felt in the moment. And that’s a wrap for 2025. This year has been nothing short of unreal. I dedicated 2025 to diving head-first into motorsport photography — and I’m proud to say I lived it. From following the GT World Challenge Australia series as accredited media, to shooting V8 Supercars in my home town, and covering the Adelaide Motorsport Festival — Australia’s equivalent to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. This year pushed my skills, discipline, and creativity further than ever. My trip to Singapore for the Formula 1 was a massive highlight. Before the race weekend kicked off, I joined a midnight supercar cruise with 20+ cars, shooting rollers through the Marina Bay F1 street circuit. During the trip I also photographed a yellow Lamborghini Huracán, plus an M4 and M2 (photos to come). I then spent the weekend photographing F1 (unfortunately not accredited yet, but working on it!) with challenge of capturing the sport from the fan perspective. Across the rest of the year, I had the opportunity to photograph some incredible machines, including a McLaren GT, McLaren Artura, Maserati GranTurismo Sport, Porsche 991.2 GT3 RS, and a Lexus LC500. To finish off the year, I released my first digital E-Book, helping new photographers learn the foundations of automotive and motorsport photography. 2025 was a year of growth, opportunity, and memorable moments. And 2026 is already shaping up even bigger — I’ll be shooting the Formula 4 Australia series alongside GT World Challenge Australia, and I’m already locked in to attend the 2026 Bathurst 12 Hour GT3 race. I almost skipped this photo. The edit changed everything - settings below. Straight out of camera, this frame felt dull and lifeless. Heavy clouds, soft contrast, and very little separation between elements. Normally this is the kind of shot that gets ignored. Instead, I treated it as an editing challenge and focused on rebuilding depth and color using targeted Adobe Lightroom masks. When you’re working with overcast or cloudy photos, global sliders usually make things worse. Masking lets you decide where light should feel brighter, where warmth belongs, and how to subtly guide the viewer’s eye through the scene without pushing the entire image too far. Below are the exact Lightroom mask settings I used so you can recreate this edit step by step. COPY MY LIGHTROOM MASK SETTINGS: Mask 1 - Leading Line

Using Expert RAW mode comes with the great advantage of uncompressed files and full dynamic range, even on mobile.
