CHEvery squat, every rep, every positive affirmation, every nourishing meal, every stride – molding not just my body, but also shaping a positive mindset for my little ones. It’s incredible how these small moments sculpt their perception of health and happiness.
Carving out time for exercise often brings along a heavy burden of guilt – a feeling that I carried with me for many years as well. Only in the recent two years have I begun to witness the sweet fruits of my diligence. Interestingly, my three older boys frequently create these precious snapshots, much like the one captured in this video.

What research and clinical practice actually show
Children learn respect through both modeling and relationship repair.
Modeling matters. How parents speak to one another, uphold boundaries, and handle conflict strongly shapes how children relate to each parent.
When a father is openly disrespectful toward a mother, it can confuse children. They receive mixed signals about authority and boundaries, who to listen to, whose limits matter, and what respect looks like. This confusion can make it harder for a mother to maintain or rebuild respect, even when she is doing many things well.
This dynamic is often described as triangulation in family systems theory. When one parent undermines the other, children can be pulled into an unconscious alliance or feel pressure to “choose sides,” which increases anxiety and complicates respect and attachment.
Harder does not mean impossible. Research on attachment and authoritative parenting shows that mothers can still build and restore respect through consistency, emotional regulation, clear boundaries, and repair after rupture, even in imperfect systems.
Respect is relational, not fixed. It develops over time through safety, predictability, leadership, and repair, not through a single interaction or one parent’s behavior alone.
So while science does not support “100% of the time” as a literal truth, it does support this nuanced reality:
👉 Disrespect toward a mother is more likely and more difficult to undo, when children regularly witness her being undermined by their father.
This isn’t about blaming fathers.
It’s about understanding how mixed signals disrupt children’s internal maps and why united, respectful coparenting matters so deeply.
Mothers are not powerless.
But they should not have to overcome confusion that was never theirs to create.
