DREver heard of RCPD?
It stands for Retrograde Cricopharyngeus Dysfunction — a mouthful that basically means your upper esophageal sphincter (the “gate” at the top of your esophagus) doesn’t relax properly to let gas escape.
What it feels like:
• Inability to burp (ever)
• Bloating and pressure in the chest/neck
• Gurgling noises in the throat
• Discomfort after eating or drinking, especially carbonated beverages
Who gets it?
Often young to middle-aged adults, but it can affect anyone. Many people have had symptoms for years without knowing there’s a name for it.
How we diagnose it:
Esophageal manometry with provocation — a test that measures pressure in your esophagus while we gently challenge it with a gas stimulus, to see if the upper esophageal sphincter relaxes.
How we treat it:
Botox injections into the cricopharyngeus muscle — relaxes the “gate” so air can escape
Some may later need a minor surgical procedure if symptoms recur
Bottom line:
If you can’t burp and live with constant bloating and throat pressure, RCPD is real — and fixable.

BAOn March 8th 2022 I got diagnosed with Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction (RCPD). After suffering from stomach pain, chest pain and nausea every single day for as long as I can remember. I’ve seen every doctor under the sun over the last 8 or so years in the hope to find the answers. No one knew why. I’ve done endless tests and trialled all sorts of medications with no relief. It debilitated me every single day. Ot gave me anxiety about leaving my home - going to uni, to events, to dinners, to lunches. Therefore causing me to miss out on many of these occasions.
This diagnosis could give me a new start at life. I’ve had 2 treatments so far and all I can do is hope it works.
For now I’ve got to keep fighting and stay hopeful 🙏💪🏻
