In a world fighting to hijack our attention it's on us to be our own hero. We have to make regulating our nervous system priority #1. It's the same as how on an airplane we're told to put on our own oxygen mask first. When we have authority over ourselves, our reactions and our inner peace we are more equipped to handle what the world is throwing at us. Obviously we are not meant to know all that is happening everywhere all the time and we're all just doing our best. But I cannot recommend enough compiling your own tools to help keep you grounded amidst the chaos. Sometimes the chaos is positive which can also positively overwhelming.... finding equanimity is key. This morning I woke up with a busy mind and didn't hesitate. Straight to mama ocean. I tried something new and did a standing meditation. Stood tall, rolled my shoulders back, slight bend in my knees, took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I let my thoughts filter through, said my thank yous, noticed how my body was feeling then came back to an old mantra of mine... "I can. I will. I am." Focused on repeating this in my mind and letting go of any fear, self doubt, worry or anxiety that was bubbling up. I love this saying as it help me to re-affirm believing in myself. Depending on what's up for me the meaning of these words can shift. But I wanted to share this tool as it has been helpful for me. After my long meditation and my legs shaking, I opened my eyes facing the sun with gratitude and went straight for a cold dip in the water. All is well my friends. Here are 5 ways to make sure your workouts build you up instead of burn you out: 1. Dynamic warm up- primes your nervous system to handle heavy loads by boosting blood flow and motor neuron recruitment, which is why it reduces your injury risk. 2. Lighter load warm up set- same idea. your nervous system needs to be prepared before it’s challenged. Ease into the pattern before you load it. 3. Breathe through each rep- controlled breathing slows your heart rate and suppresses a sympathetic response, keeping your nervous system regulated while you workout. 4. Slow down the reps- forces your nervous system to recruit the right muscles and improve body awareness, which sharpens your mind-muscle connection. 5. Downshift after your workout- transitions your nervous system from a sympathetic to a parasympathetic state, which is where recovery happens.
