CUMarley grew up in poverty in rural Jamaica and later in the tough neighborhoods of Kingston, so he saw firsthand that money didn’t necessarily bring happiness or freedom. Through his connection to Rastafari movement, he believed that true wealth was spiritual living with purpose, faith, and freedom rather than chasing material success.
So when a journalist asked him if he was rich, Marley flipped the question and asked, “What do you mean, rich? Possessions make you rich? I don’t have that type of richness. My richness is life.” He wasn’t denying that he was successful; he was making a point that real richness comes from life, love, music, and spiritual fulfillment, not money.

JOVery sorry to hear we’ve lost the wonderful man, dear friend, and Jamaican music legend @jimmycliff. We had the privilege of recording and performing with him over the years. He was the dearest of men and one of the great originators of reggae music. Prayers and condolences for his family and friends.

ROIn Memoriam: 2010 Inductee @jimmycliff was instrumental in spreading reggae music around the world. His musical journey started in primary school, where he began writing songs about life growing up in Jamaica. With his starring role as the singing outlaw Ivan in the 1972 film The Harder They Come and his magnificent performances on its soundtrack, Cliff introduced the sound and message of reggae to a global audience. His other classic tracks included “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” “Vietnam,” and “Trapped,” which was popularized for rock audiences by Bruce Springsteen’s cover. Cliff’s glorious voice channeled the struggles of his people, sprinkled with hope, aspiration, and love.
