Comment "BOOK" below for more info and pre-order links for my new book, Inside the Box, in which I share science and stories that show how constraints can make you more creative, productive, and satisfied. Brain first. AI second. An MIT study found that students who started essays with ChatGPT remembered less (almost nothing, really) and showed weaker reasoning. When they thought first and used AI second, though, their writing and recall improved. Use the tool to amplify your thinking, not replace it. #davidepstein #research #mindset

Combining Claude Code with NotebookLM is a complete cheat code that nobody's talking about 🔥 Comment "SETUP" for everything. Here's how to set up your own research agent that costs you nothing and runs locally: 1. Clone the notebooklm-py repository from GitHub 2. Install the requirements with pip install -r requirements.txt 3. Run playwright install chromium to get the browser driver 4. Add the included skill file to your Claude Code setup 5. Start feeding sources to your new research agent This combo gives you a research assistant that can pull together slide decks, infographics, and comprehensive reports in minutes. NotebookLM handles the RAG processing while Claude Code automates the entire workflow through the terminal. The setup takes about two minutes and your data stays completely private since everything runs on your machine. 🔥 Comment "SETUP" for everything. #ai #automation #research #claude #productivity

The doctors took tissue from a dying Black woman in 1951. They never asked. They never told her family. Those cells are still alive today—and changed everything. Baltimore, Maryland. January 29, 1951. Henrietta Lacks felt the knot inside her. Deep. Wrong. Painful. She'd just given birth to her fifth child four months earlier—another boy named Joseph. But something wasn't right. Unexplained bleeding. Sharp pain. A hardness that shouldn't be there. At thirty-one years old, Henrietta knew her own body. This wasn't normal. Dr. Howard Jones examined her. What he saw shocked him. A purple mass on her cervix, shiny and firm. He'd never seen a tumor that looked quite like that. He took a biopsy. Sent it to pathology. The diagnosis came back: cervical cancer. Adenocarcinoma. Aggressive. Henrietta returned eight days later for treatment. Doctors inserted radium tubes—the standard cancer treatment at the time—directly into her cervix. Radiation to burn away the tumor. During that procedure, a surgeon sliced away two samples. One from the tumor. One from healthy cervical tissue nearby. Henrietta wasn't told. Wasn't asked. Had no idea. Those samples went to George Otto Gey's laboratory on the top floor of the hospital. For nearly thirty years, Dr. Gey had been trying to grow human cells in culture—to keep them alive outside the body long enough to study them. Every sample died within days. Then came Henrietta's cells. Gey's lab assistant, Mary Kubicek, labeled the sample "HeLa"—the first two letters of Henrietta's first and last name—and placed it in culture medium. She expected nothing. Just another failure. But the next day, something impossible happened. The cells multiplied.Today, Henrietta Lacks is called the mother of modern cell biology. Her contribution to science is immeasurable. Her cells have been involved in more than 75,000 studies. The polio vaccine. Cancer treatments. Gene mapping. Cloning. In vitro fertilization. HIV research. COVID-19 vaccine development. All of it traces back to Henrietta. The woman who was never asked. Who never consented. Who never knew. Whose cells refused to die.#biology #history #research #vaccine #genetic

🔬Microsoft researchers, in collaboration with Providence Health and the University of Washington, have developed an AI system called GigaTIME that can generate advanced cancer imaging from routine tissue samples costing just ten dollars. The system was trained on 40 million cancer cells and applied to over 14,000 patients across 51 hospitals, covering 24 cancer types. It uncovered more than 1,200 previously undetectable connections between immune cell behavior and tumor progression. Results were independently validated against 10,000 additional patients. The open-source model could give hospitals worldwide access to critical immunotherapy insights without the thousand-dollar imaging equipment currently required. Study: “Multimodal AI generates virtual population for tumor microenvironment modeling” published in Cell DOI: 10.1016/j.cell.2025.11.016 #ai #medical #tech #science #research

More details below: The projects I'll be working on when I'm not doing my PhD are @the_scholarly_letter_ and Scholar Square (forgot to add that in the video lol) 1. Supervisors: I won't have a formal supervisor for most of it. But I will have people around me through our community Scholar Square. There are many people who are doing their PhDs or just about to finish. @dr.san__ , to name just one, has already been helping me with a structure for the first 21 months that mirrors her own formal PhD program. I know I'll be able to lean on them. 2. University affiliation: I am aware that journey will require approval from traditional academic journals. Eventually, it will require approval from a traditional University as well. Exactly how to reconcile this with a desire to do independent scholarship I don't have a perfect answer for yet. But for the most part, I'll be outside the academy. 3. Can you publish without an affiliation? Yes. If your paper is good enough. It has been done for many years and will continue to be done for many to come. 4. Have I chosen the University I will apply to? Yes. At this (very early stage) it looks like the faculty at Warwick University have overlapping expertise with my proposed area of research. The University may change who knows, but that's the plan. 5. What will I do after? I don't know. If I can support my scholarship for the next 6 years and earn a PhD independently then I think I'll be just fine. I don't want an academic career. The goal has never been to become a tenured track professor. 6. What if I fail? It's possible. In 6 years time if all I have to show for my efforts is a publication or two then I will have failed at earning my PhD by this deadline. But I think I'd have made my point - scholarship can exist outside academia. #academia #research #scholar #phd #science
