ITStanding beside a giant redwood tree can completely shift the sense of time. Seeing a 33-year-old person next to a tree like this makes that number feel incredibly small.
Trees record their lives in rings, each year quietly written into the wood. Some redwoods carry thousands of those rings, silent records of centuries passing.
This particular tree was cut down in the 1950s, but its story stretched back nearly 3,000 years.
If someone is fortunate enough to live a full life, it might only add up to a hand’s width of rings compared to the thousands this tree once held.
Even something ancient and mighty like a redwood eventually falls.
It’s a humbling reminder that our time here is short, but that doesn’t make it meaningless. In many ways, it makes it more meaningful.
