FOThese are rootstock suckers! Identifying them on your citrus tree is not difficult once you know what to look for. They are branches that grow from the lower rootstock portion of a grafted citrus tree, here below the diagonal scar.
Citrus trees are often grafted onto a different set of roots, and those leaves can have a 3-leaf pattern or look like regular lemon leaves. In either case, you want to remove them as soon as you see them. When allowed to grow, the rootstock will eventually take over the tree and kill the scion, which is the main part where the fruit grows. Here is an example of a Rangpur Lime tree with new growth coming from below the graft line. These will be removed.
