SAEntomologist, naturalist, and nature educator, Meehir Pawar is Sanctuary’s Young Naturalist of the Year 2024. For his tireless efforts to advance scientific understanding and for inspiring a new generation of naturalists to understand and protect the natural world, Sanctuary honours him.
“The forests are my safe retreat,” Meehir Pawar says with unwavering passion. “Their natural history is my open encyclopaedia – a resource I wish to share with everyone.” Just 22 years old, this naturalist is already a trained entomologist, who spends much of his time immersed in wild forests, absorbing the wonders of nature. With a particular affinity for dragonflies and damselflies, he is acutely aware of the vital ecological roles these odonates play as both prey and predator, and as indicators of the health of wetlands. In a world where insect populations are rapidly declining, young conservationists like Meehir are pillars of hope. “Insects are the foundation of nature’s food chains,” he says. “Without them, nothing higher up can survive.”
For the past several years, he has dedicated weekends to guiding students and adults on nature walks around Mumbai to help them connect with the natural world. On these expeditions, he educates participants on topics including waste management, recycling, the importance of forests in urban settings, and human-wildlife interactions, thus empowering them to make informed, ecologically responsible choices.

DATop 10 Mundial: Un Hito para Chile en Paisaje Profesional

Esta es la serie completa por la cual he sido nombrado Shortlisted en la categoría Professional - Landscape de los Sony World Photography Awards 2026 (el equivalente al Festival de Cannes pero de fotografía)
Este reconocimiento cobra una magnitud increíble al revisar las cifras de este año: el certamen recibió más de 430.000 obras de fotógrafos de todo el planeta. Ser seleccionado entre los 10 mejores del mundo en la categoría Profesional, compitiendo codo a codo con referentes de Europa y Estados Unidos, es un honor que aún estoy procesando.
Es una noticia que me llena de alegría y honor de ser el único chileno en la competencia profesional y el único latinoamericano en la categoría de Paisaje este año, lo que le da un sentido aún mayor a este trabajo. Mi serie, titulada “The Last Glow”, es una exploración visual sobre la fragilidad y la memoria del paisaje, capturando ese resplandor residual de la Patagonia.
Es un privilegio saber que estas imágenes de nuestro territorio viajarán a Londres para ser exhibidas en la Somerset House y formarán parte del libro oficial de este año. Gracias a todos por sus mensajes y a la gente que siempre ha estado ahí alentando.
