ALIn 1963, Sam Cooke and his band were turned away by a “whites-only” motel in Louisiana, even though they had reservations. After arguing with the hotel receptionist, Cooke was arrested later that night for “disturbing the peace.”
He wrote this song following that incident and after hearing Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.” Cooke wanted to create something equally meaningful, a song that captured the hope and pain of Black Americans in the 1960s.
Since then, the song has become a symbol of resilience and hope in the face of adversity, featured in countless films, protests, and retrospectives on American music and civil rights history.
Unfortunately, Sam Cooke never performed it live publicly, except once on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in February 1964. However, that performance was never recorded or archived, so no live footage or audio exists today.
The artists in the video are Brian Owens and his father, Thomas Owens, performing in front of a studio audience at Shock City Studios in St. Louis, MO.
