Is Seventh Generation sustainable or is it greenwashing? 🫧 Welcome to “sustainable or greenwashing month” where everyday leading up to Earth Month I’m sharing if brands and products are actually what they say they are. 🕵️‍♀️ Seventh Generation is a well known household cleaning brand and originally started as a mail-order catalog business that specialized in energy-, water-, and resource-saving products. The name is a reference to a philosophy which says “in our every deliberation, we must consider the impact of our decisions on the next seven generations.” The brand is a B Corp, EPA safer choice partner, USDA Certified Biobased, FSC Certified, Leaping Bunny Cruelty Free, plus I like how they have a lot of ingredient disclosure for each product. Packaging uses a considerable amount of PCR plastic, and Seventh Generation is committed to paying all the workers throughout their supply chain a livable wage. They offer a Annual Corporate Consciousness Report which details their sustainability goals and lays a solid path on how they hope to achieve them, and they also seem to have several nonprofits they work with to give back to communities. With all of that information, Seventh Generation seems sustainable to me & I love how it’s available and accessible for many people - but what do you think? They aren’t the worst, but they certainly aren’t as clean as they claim to be with these big brands use vague wording and umbrella terms like “fragrances”. They also are using preservatives and surfactants despite the “non-toxic” marketing 😳 I personally use Branch Basics and love everything about them - ingredients clearly listed and no sketchy wording!
