Un pensionato americano di circa 70 anni, affetto da demenza, è diventato protagonista di una storia insolita che si è diffusa rapidamente su internet. From Numbness to Heartbreak
The immediate emotional impact was overwhelming. “I can’t even describe the feeling. It’s like my whole body just got numb,” Bookman told WABC. For a woman who grew up in foster care and raised four children as a single mother, the win represented a total transformation for her family’s future.
However, the euphoria was short-lived. When she returned the following day to finalize her winnings, a casino employee delivered a devastating blow: “You didn’t win nothing.”
The “Malfunction” Clause
The New York State Gaming Commission eventually stepped in, ruling that the machine had suffered a technical malfunction. The casino pointed to a standard disclaimer found on all their machines:
“Malfunctions void all pays and plays.”
According to the commission, the machine’s maximum payout was actually capped at $6,500; the $43 million figure was simply a software error.
The Final Offer
In lieu of the multimillion-dollar payout, the casino offered Bookman a complimentary steak dinner and a payment of $2.25—the actual balance remaining on the machine.
“All I could think about was my family,” Bookman said, her voice breaking as she recounted the experience. The case eventually led to a legal battle, highlighting the often-harsh fine print that governs the world of high-stakes gambling.
