As we progress towards our Flight Ready Engine (FRE) & HOPE Vehicle development program, we have successfully executed the BSE-II engine hot fire test campaign. This phase focused on validating key reusability technologies - including injection, throttling, and ignition operating at ~12 bar chamber pressure and temperatures exceeding 2200°C. Building on our BSE-I campaign, where we demonstrated India’s first Pintle Injection mechanism, BSE-II takes us a step further with stable combustion under blow-down feed conditions, refined impingement mixing architecture, and expected plume behavior, including Mach diamond formation during firing. The entire testing stack - engine, test bench, control systems, test instrumentation and the DAQ system — has been fully designed and developed in-house by Team Abyom SpaceTech & Defence. This campaign successfully validated combustion stability, chamber pressure targets, and overall integrated system performance. Each step like this strengthens not just our propulsion systems, but also the ecosystem required to build reliable, reusable launch capabilities - contributing to India’s growing strength in Space and Defence. Small engine. Big step forward. Ahmedabad-based Omspace Rocket and Exploration recently made history by launching a 4.2-meter rocket from a temporary facility near Bavaliyari, Gujarat. This is the first time a private company has successfully launched a vehicle from Gujarat, marking a major milestone in India’s private space sector. The rocket reached three kilometres, testing key systems, but the bigger breakthrough lies in its liquid engine technology. Unlike traditional solid motors, liquid engines allow precise control. They can adjust thrust, shut down, and restart mid-flight, which is crucial for accuracy, efficiency, and reusability. At the core of this system is a turbopump that pushes fuel into the engine at high pressure. Omspace’s engines run on a cryogenic mix of liquid oxygen and biomethane and go through extensive testing before launch. Cold flow tests ensure the fuel spray is correct, hot fire tests measure thrust on the ground, and sounding rockets validate avionics in real flight conditions. This technology forms the foundation for Omspace’s broader goal: the Infinity-One. It is a modular launch vehicle designed to carry up to 350 kilograms to orbit and achieve a 24-hour turnaround, allowing rockets to land, be refurbished, and relaunch in a single day. To support this, the team recently moved to a 30,000-square-foot R&D centre in Ahmedabad and is finalising cryogenic engine prototypes, aiming for a first commercial launch in January 2028. Founded in 2020 by Ravindra Raj, Omspace is India’s first company developing a fully indigenous, modular, and reusable rocket. The recent launch also validated critical systems like 3D-printed igniters and autonomous recovery, demonstrating that the startup is on track to make reusable, cost-efficient space launches a reality. This achievement positions Omspace at the forefront of India’s private space race and brings the vision of affordable, locally-built satellite launches closer to reality. #startuppedia #spacetechnology #isro #spacesector

What is Agnite Booster Engine? Agnite is a 3D-printed semi-cryogenic rocket engine developed by Chennai-based startup Agnikul Cosmos. It is designed as a single-piece engine, eliminating the need for multiple assembled components. This design significantly improves engine reliability and structural efficiency, as fewer joints reduce the chances of mechanical failure. Key Breakthrough: 3D Printing Technology The biggest highlight of Agnite is its single-piece 3D-printed construction. Traditional engines require thousands of parts and months of assembly, whereas this engine is manufactured as one integrated unit. This innovation helps in reducing production complexity and turnaround time, making rocket manufacturing faster and more cost-effective. Global Significance of the Test The successful test marks a major achievement as Agnite is reported among the largest single-piece 3D-printed rocket engines globally. It positions India among leading nations using additive manufacturing in aerospace, a technology increasingly shaping modern space missions. Role in Agnibaan Launch Vehicle The Agnite engine is expected to power stages of Agnikul’s Agnibaan rocket, a small satellite launch vehicle designed for low Earth orbit missions. Agnibaan is capable of customised launches, making it suitable for growing demand in the small satellite market. Boost to India’s Private Space Ecosystem The success of Agnite reflects the rapid growth of India’s private space startups under IN-SPACe reforms.
