I was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer at 31. Colon cancer in young adults is rising, and many people don’t recognize the symptoms early enough. Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing my journey openly; the symptoms, surgeries, treatment, and the perspective helping me move through it. If you or someone you love is going through something similar, know that you’re not alone. Awareness matters. #coloncancer #coloncancerawareness #stage4cancer #youngcancerpatient #cancerjourney

Tell newly diagnosed me 11 years ago that I’d be landing in India for innovative integrative cancer care and she’d have laughed and thought you were crazy. But if living with cancer has taught me anything it’s that healing isn’t linear. It evolves. So, so must I. This is my next chapter. I will share what my treatment plan will look like over the coming days as I know more myself. Follow @hopethelifestyle to understand why this place was a no brainer for me. P.S The clinic greeted me at the airport with a bunch of roses 🌹 ☺️ #hopethelifestyle #aohc #integrativecancercare #stage4cancer

Quarterly treatment for stage 4 metastatic cancer. After the hugs and catching up, my doctor paused and said, “It’s been about four years.” Four years ago I was at my PCP’s getting checked out for a clogged duct I thought I couldn’t get unclogged. Four years ago I didn’t have the label of breast cancer. Four years. Four years was my original prognosis. I remember hearing that timeline so clearly… feeling like the ground dropped beneath me. I thought, if this stat- MY given stat is true, I won’t even see Sophia make it to kindergarten. And now… here I am. Four years later. Feeling healthier, stronger, centered. I am not a statistic and refuse to be one. It’s a strange place to live… this space between two realities. One where life feels almost “normal,” where the medications, routines and treatments have become part of my everyday rhythm. And another reality where I’m still very much in the cancer world where scans, vigilance and uncertainty quietly exist in the background. My team has always said, “At five years, we send holiday cards. We loosen the reins.” That milestone feels both hopeful and so surreal. For now, we stay in surveillance; low dose chemo, heavy minerals, homeopathics… watching closely, caring for my whole body, honoring what it’s been through. With a high BRCA2 and a system that needs to work extra hard to detox, staying aware is how we move forward. Grateful to be here. Holding both realities at once. Still walking this road, one season at a time. ❤️

You won’t believe it…. I was 31 years old, living my life like everything was fine. I was working, training, and staying active. At first, I thought it was just digestive issues, but it didn’t go away. Over time, it started getting worse. I had constant diarrhea. I was dealing with severe abdominal cramping. I started losing weight without trying. I felt constant fatigue, and I lost my appetite. None of it made sense. The pain got so bad that I ended up in urgent care and even the ER trying to figure out what was going on. Because of how active I am, doctors even thought it could be an abdominal strain from training. But I knew something wasn’t right. At 31 years old, I was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer. Looking back, those symptoms were signs that something much bigger was happening. Colon cancer in young adults is rising, and it is important that you do not ignore your body. That is why awareness matters. #coloncancer #coloncancerawareness #stage4cancer #youngcancerpatient #cancerjourney

➡️Comment HEAL to learn what we did step by step to beat stage 4 colon cancer. Getting a cancer diagnosis is overwhelming to say the least. You are inundated with info and pushed to make quick life altering decisions. But now that Jake is over 3 years cancer free from stage 4 colon cancer- we have time to reflect on things we have learned along the way. Here are 3 thoughts that often come up: 💪1. There is no shortcut to health. Healthful living is what leads to health. And, yes, it takes some work. We can’t take a pill, a supplement, or a treatment and expect it to “fix us.” We have to be involved. I always get nervous when I hear a cancer patient say they are looking for a “cure.” The real long term cure and power lies in our day to day living- what we eat, drink, where we spend time (& with who), what we think, how we handle stress, etc. It all matters regardless of what else we use to help. ❌2. I’m sorry - but there is no amount of alcohol that is good for you. I’m shocked that there are practitioners who will still not come right out and say this. (I suspect it’s because they themselves don’t want to give it up?) But if you are actively trying to get rid of cancer then it’s wise to give it up as it’s adding to your toxin load and causing damage. Alcohol is a leading cause of cancer so, it’s really a no brainer. Can you have a drink here or there with active cancer and be ok? Maybe? I can’t predict. But if you want to give yourself the best chance - why would you? 🩺3. Oncologists are not all knowing. We have to recognize that they went to a school that taught them how to use chemo, radiation and surgery (and now immunotherapy) to help cancer. But, their school doesn’t have ALL the answers (clearly) and just because it wasn’t something THEY learned doesn’t mean YOU shouldn’t. I’m not telling you not to listen to your oncologist or to use oncology. We used oncology ourselves on our journey. But please know there are other approaches to cancer that also are legitimate and have value. You are allowed to incorporate whatever approaches feel right for YOU. #coloncancersurvivor #cancersurvivor #stage4cancer #coloncancer #stage4coloncancer

Tomorrow is never guaranteed for anyone. I think it’s so important for anyone to prepare ahead of time. Create things for loved ones, writing notes and letters for loved ones to leave behind. Making memorials, etc. Here are some ideas that I have already either done or plan to leave for Brynlee: - writing birthday cards - writing cards for big events (wedding, baby shower, etc) - a book of information about me - a quilt made out of my softball t-shirts - a build a bear with my voice recorded in it - voice recording (me reading her books) - sentimental jewelry pieces - making her a matching charm bracelet - clothes for her to grow into that I bought and picked out - a bird house that we make together - pottery that we make together such as a special plate, or plant pot - photo albums - making a snow globe collection (something I did when I was little and passing down to her) - making a recipe book for her So far this is what I have thought out! What are you leaving behind for your kids whether you’re in the same situation as me or not? Feel free to add ideas down below! . . . . . . . #breastcancer #metastaticcancer #metastaticbreastcancer #stage4cancer #stage4breastcancer

Time for another post run chat…this time, we are talking about bone and muscle health. 1) Chemotherapy can have direct toxic effects on osteoblasts (bone forming cells) and increase pro-inflammatory markers, such as interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha, that can increase osteoclast (cells that break down bone) activity. 2) Muscle and bone are tightly interconnected. Loss in one accelerates decline in the other, creating a vicious cycle. Muscle contractions generate forces that stimulate bone formation and help maintain strength. When muscle mass and strength decline, the reduced force on bone accelerates bone loss and increases fracture risk. Certain bone proteins, called osteokines, are released during bone resorption which can promote muscle protein breakdown and contribute to muscle atrophy. 3) Bone metastases should not preclude exercise which has significant benefits in metastatic cancer. The key is to personalize exercise: knowing where your bone lesions are and avoiding high-impact or high-risk activities in those areas. I want to stress that you don’t have to figure it out alone-your oncologist and a knowledgeable exercise professional can help design a plan that works for your body and goals. I do urge you to talk to your medical team before taking part in any high impact activity, activities that involves twisting such as tennis, or anything that may increase your fall risk such as skiing. It’s not to say that these activities are out but they should be carefully thought about taking your personal history into account. Let me know your questions! #muscle #bonehealth #strengthtraining #exercise #cancer #metastaticcancer #stage4cancer #oncologist
