SAAncient Sumerian votive figures (Early Dynastic period, c. 2900–2350 BCE) were created as offerings to the gods and placed inside temples. These statues weren’t decorative, they represented the worshipper in a state of eternal devotion, standing before the deity even when the person could not be physically present.
Their most striking feature is the exaggerated, wide open eyes.
In Sumerian belief, large eyes symbolised constant awareness, spiritual attentiveness, and an unbroken connection with the divine. The clasped hands, rigid posture, and stylised robes further emphasised humility and reverence.
