On July 5, 1954, Elvis Presley was just goofing around in the studio with Scotty Moore and Bill Black when lightning struck. ⚡⁠ ⁠ During a break, they launched into an upbeat version of “That’s All Right.” Producer Sam Phillips hit record and the rest is rock & roll history. ⁠ ⁠ That spontaneous jam became Elvis’s first-ever Sun Records release.⁠ ⁠ Later that night, Sam rushed the track to WHBQ DJ Dewey Phillips, who gave it a spin at 9:30 PM. The session had begun on January 13, and Elvis recorded eight songs in two days, but the work had to be postponed due to a severe cold. On January 20, Elvis recorded only one song – the stunning rock-gospel "In the Ghetto" by Mac Davis (January 21, 1942 – September 29, 2020). Elvis worked from 9 PM on Monday, January 20, until early Tuesday morning. The song was recorded in 23 takes. "He sang absolutely amazingly," said trumpeter Wayne Jackson, who witnessed the entire recording process. #elvis #elvisfan #elvisfans
