ALRead this before you tell EI — or your employer — about the length of maternity / parental leave that you plan to take.
You can choose between “standard benefits” (aka 12 months), and “extended benefits” (aka 18 months). You can’t change between standard and extended parental benefit options once a week of parental benefits has been paid.
Here’s the thing — either way you receive the same amount of money. The 18 months just stretches out the length of the payments.
One question I often see asked is “what if I want to take 15 months?”
If you wish to take 15 months of maternity leave, you should tell your employer that you wish to take 15 months (or even say 18 — but that is a topic for another post — but the short story is that your job is protected for 18 months and you have the right to change your mind on the amount of leave that you wish to take), and then tell EI that you wish to take 12 months.
While that will mean that you will have no EI income for the last 3 months, you are still better off. If you sign up for 18 months of EI and return to work at 15 months, you lose out on the remaining 3 months of the lower payment. You are better off to save a portion of your EI each month of the 12 months that you receive it to get you through the final 3 months to get you to 15.
Because here’s the thing that first time mom’s don’t always know — you receive the same total payment from EI if you take 12 months, or if you take 18 months. And if you sign up for payments over 18 months and then go back to work sooner, you don’t get the remaining payments.

AU💄I’ve always felt more confident not wearing makeup. But ever since I’ve been doing more tv interviews and speaking gigs, I find I’ve put on more makeup in the last year then in the first 47 years.
Actually, my daughter puts on my makeup because she’s GenZ so obviously knows more than me.
Anyway, I decided I didn’t want to wear makeup to this event. I was speaking in front of an audience, not for the camera and I just wasn’t feeling it.
