There is no such thing as a “small cut” when it affects a hungry child. Removing the California Department of Ed doesn’t shrink government—it shrinks opportunity. Special ed. Immigrant support. School meals. Rights our students depend on. And while our district may not rely on federal funds entirely, the loss STILL leaves a dent—a preventable one. If there were a real alternative, we’d adapt. But dismantling the Department of Education altogether? That’s reckless. I’m a teacher, a mama, and an advocate. And I won't stay silent while students are left behind. The average salary of these workers is only $25,000. In California, that is simply not enough. Picket lines will continue through Thursday. When we organize, our voices cannot be ignored. Last week we picketed with @utlanow , showing the unity and strength of their union victory ✊🏽 For 2022-2023 school year the new superintendent Carvalho with the district had announced 4 added “Acceleration days” to the academic calendar, done without negotiation with UTLA, and with an estimated cost of $122 million. Although the days were optional for C-basis employees (teachers, subs) and for students, this was a breach of contract since they must agree on the academic calendar together. And questions were raised on what value the actual days would have for students. The union called for boycotts on the first acceleration day, Oct 19. In response to this pressure the district capitulated, instead moving the proposed days to before winter and spring break. This was a victory for UTLA but still had morning pickets on the 19th, to show the unity and strength of the union and that teachers would not back down, as well as to promote the Beyond Recovery Platform the union is currently bargaining for. #utlastrong #unionstrong
