Unveiling the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Omega began the year with a new version of the Speedmaster Moonwatch. The alternative view of Omega's iconic chronograph features a polished inverted black-and-white panda-style dials, along with the Co-axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861. The speedmaster remains a true icon in the world of watchmaking. It represents adventure, ambition and human achievement. In 1957, Omega introduced the speedmaster as part of its professional collection. It was originally designed for race car drivers, built to be tough and easy to read. The tachymeter scale on the bezel allowed drivers to measure their speed quickly, making it a favorite watch among race professionals. Although the speedmaster was created for racing, it didn't stay on the ground for long. In 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra wore his personal Speedmaster during the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission. It became the first Omega watch in space. This caught NASA's attention and they soon began searching for a timepiece that could handle the extreme conditions of the space travel. When NASA started testing watches for space missions, they pushed them to the limit. The Speedmaster had to survive extreme heat, freezing cold, violet shocks, intense vibrations and the vacuum of space. It passed every test. Inspired by the Apollo 8 mission and Jim Lovell’s understated yet iconic observation—“the Moon is essentially grey”—this 2025 release brings a cleaner, more mature evolution to the DSOTM lineup. Omega has long made the lunar link a core of its identity, but here, it’s done with impressive subtlety. The 44.25mm case in brushed and polished grey ceramic immediately sets a tone—stealthy but refined, technical but not overly aggressive. It wears surprisingly well for its size thanks to the thinner 12.97mm profile and 50mm lug-to-lug length. On the wrist, it feels like a tool watch built for someone who appreciates design nuance. The dial is a showstopper. Instead of a traditional face, Omega leaves the movement visible through a laser-ablated surface that mimics the Moon’s terrain—yes, it’s a skeletonized dial, but in the most purposeful way I’ve seen.
