PRWinglets explained — small tips that make a big difference ✈️🪽
Winglets are vertical or angled extensions at the tips of an aircraft’s wings, designed to reduce drag and improve efficiency without increasing wingspan 🧠⚡. They play a major role in modern aircraft performance.
Why winglets are needed 🌬️
As an aircraft generates lift, high-pressure air from beneath the wing tries to move to the low-pressure area above it, creating wingtip vortices. These vortices increase induced drag and waste energy 🌪️. Winglets weaken these vortices, allowing the wing to produce lift more efficiently.
How winglets work ⚙️
Winglets redirect airflow at the wingtip, reducing vortex strength and improving the lift-to-drag ratio 📈. This leads to lower fuel burn, better climb performance, and extended range ⛽✈️.

FL✈️ Sharklets or Winglets
-Sharklets comes from the English word shark and the diminutive suffix let, referring to the distinctive shape which can evoke a shark fin. This is the commercial name given by Airbus to its wingtip devices. It is curved, slender and inclined upwards.
-Winglets: an older English term, formed from wing and let diminutive suffix small wing or winglets. A winglet is therefore a small wing extension, often triangular and shorter than the sharklet. The term is often associated with Boeing. They come in a variety of forms, including « blended winglets » and « Split Scimitar Winglets » (a more recent development). The idea of vertical surfaces at the wingtips dates back to a patent by Frederick W. Lanchester in 1897. However, it was NASA engineer Richard Whitcomb who played a key role in the 1970s by demonstrating that upward-tilted winglets could reduce induced drag.
The inspiration came from observing nature, particularly birds, which bend their wingtips to optimize their flight. Both technologies have the same objective: to improve aerodynamic efficiency by reducing drag-generating wingtip vortices.
