The Konkani word for winnowing pan is sup. Winnowing is the process of separating heavier components from lighter substances using wind. In Goa, farmers use a bamboo winnowing tray called a soop or sup to separate rice grain from husk.
In the past, farmers relied on the wind to winnow, but today they use fans to speed up the process. After winnowing and drying, the grain is packed into sacks and sold, stored, or parboiled.
