SCIn October 2003, 26-year-old Tina Watson from Alabama passed away during a scuba diving trip on her honeymoon at the SS Yongala wreck near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Just 11 days after their wedding, Tina and her husband, Gabe Watson, went diving together — but Tina lost consciousness underwater and was unable to be helped in time, despite Gabe’s rescue diver training.
Gabe’s account of what happened shifted on several occasions, citing strong currents, equipment issues, and ear problems. Fellow divers reported seeing him in close contact with Tina before he surfaced without her. Evidence gathered afterward, including dive computer data and underwater photographs, led investigators to look more closely at the circumstances surrounding her death.
Gabe was charged in Australia and ultimately pleaded guilty, receiving a sentence of four and a half years, of which he served 12 months. After returning to Alabama, authorities pursued additional charges, but the case was dismissed in 2012 due to insufficient evidence.
