CACologne Cathedral (Kölner Dom) is one of Europe’s most awe-inspiring Gothic masterpieces and a symbol of German heritage. Located in Cologne, Germany, it was founded in 1248 and took more than 600 years to complete, finally being finished in 1880. Its magnificent twin spires soar to approximately 157 meters (515 ft), making it one of the tallest church structures in the world.
The cathedral is renowned for its soaring architecture, intricate stone carvings, and stunning stained-glass windows, including a modern masterpiece designed by artist Gerhard Richter. It houses one of the most important Christian relics, the Shrine of the Three Kings, believed to contain the remains of the Biblical Magi, which has attracted pilgrims for centuries.
Despite severe damage during World War II, Cologne Cathedral remained standing, becoming a powerful symbol of resilience. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, welcoming millions of visitors annually and serving as both an active place of worship and an architectural wonder admired around the world.

EXThey told the architect his design was impossible. He built it anyway. And it became the most recognizable building on Earth.

The Sydney Opera House wasn’t just controversial — it almost never happened.
⠀
Jørn Utzon was a virtually unknown Danish architect when he won the design competition in 1957. The judges pulled his entry from the rejected pile. One of them called it the only design worth building.
⠀
Nobody knew how to actually construct those iconic shell-shaped roofs. The engineering didn’t exist yet.
⠀
Utzon spent years solving a problem that had never been solved before — eventually realizing every shell could be cut from the surface of a single sphere. That breakthrough saved the entire project.
⠀
Construction took 14 years. The budget blew out from $7 million to $102 million.
⠀
The politics got so ugly that Utzon was forced off the project before it was finished. He never saw the completed building in person.
⠀
It opened in 1973. Within a decade it was the most photographed structure on the planet.
⠀
In 2003 Utzon finally won the Pritzker Prize — architecture’s highest honor — largely because of this one building.

A design pulled from the trash that changed what architecture could look like forever.
