WOThe ISS crew members follow a mandatory ~2-hour daily regimen using specialized hardware: the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) simulates weightlifting through vacuum cylinders to provide axial and compressive loads for squats and deadlifts.
The T2 treadmill uses a harness and bungee system to pull astronauts toward the belt, recreating ground reaction forces for running; and the CEVIS cycle ergometer enables aerobic conditioning without a seat, with foot restraints maintaining contact.

As 2025 begins, take inspiration from @astro_kutryk’s training for his upcoming space mission! His preparation shows that discipline and readiness are key, whether you’re working on a fitness goal or tackling new challenges this year.
Joshua is using the ARED machine, the same equipment that astronauts use on the ISS, to build strength and endurance for space. On Earth, gravity naturally helps keep our muscles and bones strong. But in space, without gravity, astronauts don’t have to support their bodies, which causes muscle and bone loss.
The ARED machine helps prevent this by providing resistance similar to free weights, in space. It uses vacuum cylinders that create up to 272 kilograms of resistance to target major muscle groups. Over the course of a long-duration mission, astronauts exercise approximately two hours per day, helping mitigate the risks to their strength and bone density.

Without daily exercise on the Space Station, we would lose significant muscle mass and bone density, since we don’t have the daily loading on our bodies that Earth’s gravitational environment provides.
We have the ARED 🏋️♀️ (Advanced Resistive Exercise Device), an engineering marvel that can be configured into a large number of weight lifting exercises, a cycle ergometer 🚲 (think a stationary bike with no handlebars and no seat — not needed in space!), and a treadmill. 🏃♀️
I started exercise right away, and it was so cool. Complete muscle memory! Really feels like I never left.
