NVIDIA just announced Alpamayo — what Jensen Huang calls the world’s first thinking, reasoning autonomous vehicle AI, launching on U.S. roads later this year, starting with the Mercedes CLA.
Alpamayo isn’t just trained to see and react.
It’s trained end-to-end — from camera input to vehicle actuation — with explicit reasoning.
That means it generates:

A massive financial commitment: The project began as a $12 billion investment in 2020 and has since expanded to a monumental $165 billion, making it reportedly the largest foreign direct investment in American history being built so far. .
🔹The largest campus on U.S. soil: Spanning over 1,100 acres in north Phoenix, the campus is set to become the most advanced semiconductor facility in the United States.
🔹Enough concrete for 10 Empire State Buildings: To construct just the first of several planned factories, TSMC used enough concrete to build 10 Empire State Buildings.
🔹The “Nerve Center” of the global economy: The high-tech chips manufactured at the TSMC facilities will power products that rely on AI, 5G, and high-performance computing, such as smartphones, autonomous vehicles, and data centers.
🔹The facilities’ “cleanroom” environment is thousands of times cleaner than a hospital operating room to prevent even the smallest dust particles from damaging the microscopic transistors on the chips.
🔹From Taiwan to Arizona: Some local Arizona employees were flown to Taiwan to train for their jobs, ensuring they master the complex manufacturing process.
🔹To address concerns about water usage in the desert, TSMC’s facilities are designed to achieve “near-zero liquid discharge,” with in-house water recycling and an advanced treatment facility that can reuse nearly every drop.The Arizona facility features solar panels that double as covered parking, a visual sign of the company’s commitment to using 100% renewable electricity.
