During my last bagmaking workshop, I had this moment where I looked down at my machine and thought… wow, I’ve changed my stitch length about a dozen times. And every single one was on purpose. 3.5 mm for topstitching. 3.0 mm for faux leather or cork. 2.1–2.5 mm for construction. 5.0 mm for basting. Because each stitch tells your machine how serious the job is. And I realized — that’s the part most beginners don’t even think about. They’re so focused on following the pattern that they forget to listen to the bag. Then there’s the thread. I’m always matching both my top thread and bobbin to the section I’m sewing — because when you’re sewing a dark bag with light thread, every tiny wobble shows. And when a seam peeks through with a lighter color? You’ll see it every time you reach for that bag. Maybe it’s my Type A personality, or the Libra in me needing everything to line up just right. But these tiny, intentional details — the perfectly matched thread, the precise stitch length — that’s where the transformation happens. That’s the difference between “I made that” and “yeah, I maaaaaade that.” And if you’re wondering where to even start — every single one of my patterns includes my recommended stitch lengths for construction, topstitching, and working with faux leather or cork. Because it’s not about having the fanciest machine. It’s about learning the small things that make your bags look incredible. This is a beautiful floral canvas that I’m using as accent pockets on this mini Oxbow bag, and I use this coating to ensure it is as durable and rugged as the rest of the bag. It’s one of those steps that feels really therapeutic when you’re doing it - that initial thwap of the gel onto the fabric, and then spreading it evenly.
