Sound up for a VERY angry little chicken nugget! 🦇 This Big Brown Bat patient came to us with BIG opinions about being held, and understandably so! They had become stranded inside of someone's home, and was a little too skinny and dehydrated to fly off when they were put back outside. After some fluids, a check-up, and some food, this little bat perked right up and was happy to tell us EXACTLY what they thought about being handled by giant humans! DID YOU KNOW? Bats have social calls in addition to echolocation! Bats are famous for their ability to echolocate, allowing them to navigate and hunt for flying insects safely in the darkness. While our human ears aren't able to hear these supersonic-pitched calls, we ARE able to hear their social calls! When bats "talk" to each other, express their displeasure at being handled, or squabble and chatter among themselves in roosting colonies, they are audible to human ears. What word would you use describe this Big Brown's calls? Squeaking? Chattering? Cricketing? #bigbrownbat #bats #ifreakinglovebats #wildliferehabilitation #wildlifeeducation

Echolocation visualisation log 2 🦇: Audio Reactivity with ultrasonic bat recording An update to visualising bat echolocation. I’m introducing audio reactivity, a key element of the concept. I’ve used an ultrasonic recording of bats in flight from the BBC sound effect archive. As the name suggests, the audio causes the point cloud to react, revealing its original colour and position - turning it back into a recognisable tree. Effectively using the sound to reveal the digital environment. I’ve added an additional 3D LiDAR & photogrammetry model of a tree into a shared space in which the agent (currently the mouse cursor) can roam. I’m unsure of the tree’s species but it was found in Farlington Marshes. As you can see, the bat sounds cause a radius of influence to appear and the agent determines where this radius emits from. Next I’ll be considering bat ecology and biology to determine the point cloud colour and behaviour to be better representative of their sensory experience. And I may dabble with VR… @touchdesigner

Echolocation involves emitting high-frequency sounds and interpreting the returning echoes to detect objects and obstacles. But some surfaces such as smooth surfaces act as acoustic mirrors. This causes complications for bats to interpret their surroundings and avoid colliding with windows.
