In the early 20th century we got behaviorism. Pavlovian theory took root in the 1890’s and then exploded in popularity in the first half of the 20th century. As tech advanced neuroscience, stress and autonomic response have been studied & have become the major focus for learning & behavior in the last half of the 20th century. BUT this stayed primarily in research & advanced learning institutions. We have reached the point where this knowledge is reaching the general public & is being adapted to be taught to k-12 educators. It’s why trauma informed teaching has become so popular. Neuroscience, Psychologic Needs and Autonomic Function will now be at the helm of best practice- and good! Because learning how the brain and stress response works benefits EVERYONE! TTR is rooted in the 5 Needs: - Safety - Comfort - Autonomy - Belonging - Competency These are the 5 Needs that promote “optimal” neural and autonomic functioning- comment NEEDS to learn more. They are the perfect mix of 🧠 basic physiological ❤️ and psychological needs. And 2 years in to teaching/coaching/training teachers about the 5 Needs we are happy to say to our critics “Ha, Ha- We were right!!” just kidding, that would be inappropriate 👉 and an example of the stress response. As we approach the last half of the 2020’s we see a major shift in teaching & learning. One that will benefit both students & teachers. If you want to give yourself a heads up comment NEEDS and get the Neurodivergent Toolkit. Many of us grew up with a behaviorism-based parenting approach: rewards for “good” behavior, punishments for “bad” behavior, and a focus on compliance through control. ⚠️ Dr. Vanessa Lapointe encourages us to shift from this model to one rooted in child development—focusing on connection, understanding, and meeting children’s deeper needs. This shift means looking beyond behavior to see what your child is communicating and parenting in a way that supports their growth into healthy, resilient adults. 🕵️‍♀️ ✨ Here are some ways to make the shift: 1️⃣ Pause and reflect: Ask, “What’s driving this behavior?” instead of reacting immediately. 2️⃣ Connect before correcting: Prioritize your relationship over quick discipline. 3️⃣ Focus on long-term growth: Teach emotional regulation and problem-solving rather than seeking immediate compliance. 4️⃣ Stay curious: Learn about your child’s developmental stage and needs. 5️⃣ Model empathy: Show compassion for your child’s struggles, even while holding boundaries. It’s not always easy to unlearn what we grew up with, but this shift builds stronger connections and healthier outcomes for both parents and children. 🌈 ⁉️ What’s been your biggest challenge—or success—with this shift? Operant Conditioning: Basic Concepts Operant Conditioning (also called instrumental or reward learning) is a method of learning where behavior is influenced by consequences. It was developed through the work of E.L. Thorndike (Law of Effect) and B.F. Skinner. Skinner identified four major types of consequences: 1. Positive Reinforcement Definition: Adding a desirable stimulus to increase a behavior. Example: Giving your dog a treat when it comes to your call. Effect: Increases the probability of the behavior occurring again. 2. Negative Reinforcement Definition: Removing an undesirable stimulus to increase a behavior. Types: Escape: Behavior stops something bad (e.g., fastening a seatbelt to stop the annoying buzzer). Avoidance: Behavior prevents something bad from happening (e.g., stopping at a stop sign to avoid a crash). Effect: Increases the probability of the behavior. 3. Punishment Definition: Adding or removing a stimulus to decrease a behavior. Example: Scolding a child for writing on the walls. Effect: Decreases the likelihood of the behavior repeating. 4. Extinction Definition: When a behavior that previously got a reward no longer does. Example: If a child stops getting attention for whining, the whining may decrease. Effect: Decreases the probability of the behavior continuing. . . . .

Ivan Pavlov (1849–1936) was a Russian physiologist who won the 1904 Nobel Prize for his research on digestion. He is best known for discovering classical conditioning through his dog experiments, showing how behavior can be shaped by association. Pavlov’s work became a foundation for modern psychology, influencing behaviorism, education, and neuroscience. #ivanpavlov #psychology #Psychoeducation #psychosocial #behavioralpsychology #behaviouralscience #behaviouralscience #behaviouralscience

Behaviorist parenting is obsessed with what a child does. Developmentalist parenting is curious about why they’re doing it. One tries to control behavior. The other seeks to understand it. 📚 Behaviorism says: “If you reward the good and punish the bad, you’ll get a well-behaved child.” But that logic forgets one massive truth: Behavior isn’t a moral scorecard. It’s communication. A symptom. A message. A reflection of brain development, attachment, and nervous system regulation. 🧠 A child who hits isn’t being “bad.” They’re showing you where they lack the skills to express, cope, or problem-solve. They don’t need a spanking or a time-out. They need a teacher. 💡 Developmentalist parenting doesn’t ignore behavior. It interprets it through the lens of what’s still building in the brain… What’s still wiring in the nervous system… And what’s still forming in the child’s understanding of right, wrong, and relationship. If you’ve ever said, “I don’t want to just react—I want to actually understand my child…” This is your invitation to join the 🌟F R E E🌟Decoding Behavior Masterclass. In it, I’ll show you what’s actually happening in your child’s brain from infancy to full development — and what it takes to discipline without damaging connection, guide without control, and lead with calm authority instead of frustration. You’ll learn how to decode behavior in real time, recognize what your child’s actions are communicating, and respond in ways that teach emotional regulation, responsibility, and respect. 💻 Join Decoding Behavior live to attend free — after the class, the replay will be available for 72 hours at $17 with lifetime access before it increases to full price as a mini-course. ➡️➡️ Comment DECODE and I’ll send the details to register! #decodingbehavior #parentingtools #behavioralscience #nervoussystemeducation #brainbasedparenting #emotionalintelligence #childdevelopment #respectfulparenting #gentleparenting #traumainformedparenting #theconsideratemomma #calmparentacademy #disciplinewithoutdamage #breakingcycles #ragefreeparenting
