Walking around Bethnal Green in London, I’m always thinking about the history behind these old London pubs. They were never just somewhere to go for a drink. They were the heart of the community.
Back in the day these London pubs were meeting places for local workers, somewhere for lodgers to stay, and spots where people shared news, music and stories. A proper part of everyday life and Cockney culture.
That’s why I love talking about them when I’m walking around London. Too many historic London pubs and pie & mash shops are disappearing, and they’re a huge part of the city’s history.
So here’s a little walk through Bethnal Green and a few of its legendary boozers.

E. Pellicci, the oldest Italian cafe in London has been run by the same family on Bethnal Green Road since 1900. I went along with my friend William, because we were meeting up, but also because of something that happened when me and William were there 20 years ago that I think helps explain the unique vibe of the place. It's an absolute slice of east London history and a wonderful London experience that will very possibly reaffirm your belief in community ...should that be lacking.

HUImagine eating through hundreds of #chaat places in #EastLondon, only to find they all share similar names and tragically none of them hit the spot 😭
But then, like a food miracle, I stumbled upon the one, the only @chitnchaat_london in #BethnalGreen
10/10 DELICIOUS 😱😱😩😩🫠🫠🥰🥰💖💖
This place is a game-changer. The street food here is the #holygrail of flavour and it’s SPICY 🌶️🌶️🌶️, it’s bursting with taste, and it won’t break the bank. Honestly, I loved *almost* everything. But if I had to choose, their #keema is the MVP so spicy, so meaty, so full of flavour, it might just be the best keema I’ve ever had in a restaurant.🌟
And the chaat? Oh, the chaat! 😍 Their yoghurt-based chaat and samosa chaat made my husband inhale the entire plate. And don’t even get me started on their #dosa especially the keema dosa it’s too good to share, but I did anyway (regretted it instantly).😭
The #PinkKashmiriTea is a beauty to behold and even better to sip. The #masalachips? Imagine them drenched in a sweet, tangy sauce that makes every bite an explosion of yum. Their #nimboopani is the refreshing sip you need, perfectly balanced, no overpowering farty black salt to ruin the vibe.
And the #cheesechutney toastie? By far the most generous and tastiest I’ve ever had. The #Amritsarfish was crispy and bite-sized, though I do wish the fish had a bit more... fishiness. As for the #fushka, let’s just say Bangladeshi fushka is *miles* better than Indian #panipuri.
Yeah, I said it 😝
For dessert, the #chocolatesamosas paired with a strong, perfect cup of chai had me in foodie heaven.
Their chef knows what’s up. You can taste the love and care in every dish. We couldn’t believe it was our first time here; everything was that good. Two visits later, and I’m already plotting my third.
So if you ever find yourself in Bethnal Green, do yourself a favor and hit up @chitnchaat_london
