JARecently I’ve been asked often how I started illustrating books and book covers. To be completely honest:
1. Exposure: As in, I exposed my artwork to the world through multiple platforms of social media. I started off with blogspot, then moved on to Tumble, then moved onto Instagram, and so on.
2. Word of mouth: All it takes is ONE person to believe in you and tell people about your work. For me that person was @koyeoyedeji and I am eternally grateful.
I graduated from Parsons with a self-driven Fashion Design Degree (Integrated Design BFA) and Mr. Oyedeji recommended that I apply to be apart of this amazing program by @shoutmousepress where I got the opportunity to work with high school student authors and illustrate their stories. I had no experience illustrating children’s books and said yes and took on the challenge of figuring it out as I go.
After that people saw on Instagram that I illustrated my first children’s book and started reaching out to me about illustrating their children books. Then I got into illustrating book covers thanks to publishing companies discovering my work and reaching out.
All this to say: Continue sharing your work because you never know who’s watching 😉
