BRHave you ever heard something, a story or recollection of some past Hip Hop event and wondered, “Is that doctrine or a nonpartisan account of how something went down?”
Last week’s #hiphop50 celebrations revealed how tied our Hip Hop pioneers and fans alike are emotionally tied to the legacy of the culture. And although it’s common for those (especially the pioneers) who’ve been celebrating Hip Hop’s “birthday” the past year to view the genre’s history with an “unchanging truth or gospel,” an inability to see things from a more flexible perspective can also unintentionally negate the real anecdotes that make Hip Hop special in the first place.

I’m a Hip Hop geak just as much as the next person and I think what I have to say about the art many of us grew up on may be helpful in better organizing our thoughts about what we’re actually celebrating.

BRIt went like this, “minorities” who lived in the Bronx, NY during the 1970s were the victims of a government infrastructure that mandated policies designed to marginalize inner-city communities.
After reading that, the first thing you must do is sit in the nuance of that historical fact. Then, understand that Black and Latino people responded with their intended disenfranchisement by constructing Hip Hop, a movement that outlasted their attempted extermination by 5 decades. When you look at it that way, it’s easy to come to the realization that we turn inward in the face of obstacles instead of outward. We learn to stop handing our power over to others. We stop blaming outside of us for where we are currently, stay centered and adapt.
This is the real power of Black and Latinos, and I’m grateful to have witnessed it first hand.
