ROThe M54B22 is a 2.2-liter inline-six engine that BMW used in models like the E46 320i and the E39 520i from 2000 to 2006. While it’s the smallest of the M54 family, pushing 168 horsepower and 155 pound feet of torque might not sound like much, but don’t write it off just yet!
So, what’s the deal with tuning? The M54B22 isn’t exactly a powerhouse out of the box, but with the right mods, it can be transformed.
The typical bolt-ons like a cold air intake and performance exhaust can give you a small bump in power, but to really wake this engine up, you’re looking at more substantial mods like a stroker kit to increase displacement or even forced induction with a supercharger.
With a proper turbo kit, you might push the M54B22 to 300 to 330 horsepower, but be prepared for a hefty investment to get there.
But let’s talk issues—because no engine is perfect, right?
You may run into Cooling System Gremlins, Oil Leaks Everywhere, VANOS Troubles.
So, is the M54B22 worth the hassle? It depends. If you’re into a naturally aspirated inline-six with tuning potential and can handle the maintenance quirks, the M54B22 can be a fun and rewarding engine.
