THHave you had the chance to hike, run, or play on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail in North Carolina? One of my most memorable experiences when living in the South was backpacking the Blue Ridge Mountains with students on parts of it. The tall pine trees offered shade and coolness, the mountains themselves offered a challenge with the payoff of incredible vistas of layered peaks. I then walked some miles of the trail through the gently rolling Piedmont with a good friend who was doing the entire thing! Last summer I had the opportunity to explore the trail even more. We started at my all-time favorite spot in North Carolina, Black Balsam Knob. Then, we explored the beautiful Haw River Valley in Saxapahaw, a really cool town with a fantastic art and food scene and plenty of places to hike, run, and swing gently in a hammock. Our next stops were a solemn visit to Camp Lejeune, cool coffee shops and a long, meandering bike path. The final stop was Topsail Island and its gorgeous beaches. Nothing can beat a sunrise with the awakening waters of the Atlantic Ocean as its soundtrack.
