My first delivery as captain was from Florida to the Hamptons. The old captain rode along, and as we passed through some tight ICW spots, the boat brushed bottom. He turned to me and said, “You’re not a real captain until you’ve touched bottom.” Funny now—not so funny then. Charts are often outdated, especially in areas yachts rarely travel. One wrong tide or bad read, and your name’s on the damage report ⚓
2️⃣ Hitting something
This job is high stakes. You’re maneuvering a multimillion-dollar yacht in tight marinas, around clueless boaters, and in unpredictable conditions. Systems can fail. Engines can cut. Weather turns. And sometimes, you’re on a schedule that gives you zero room to breathe. One wrong move, and it’s your a$$ on the line 💥
3️⃣ Being responsible for everyone onboard
As the captain, I’m the master of the vessel. That means I’m legally responsible for every person’s safety at sea. This isn’t just a job title—it’s weight. Most people don’t realize that when something goes wrong, I’m not just involved—I’m accountable ⚖️
4️⃣ Paperwork hell
Driving the yacht is the fun part. It’s 10% of the job. The other 90%? Managing people, managing chaos, and drowning in paperwork. Reports, receipts, crew documentation, insurance, customs, fuel, logistics—it’s endless. Being a great captain isn’t just about docking—it’s about staying organized so you don’t get buried 🗂️
5️⃣ Owners who don’t listen
You’re the consultant. You give them the facts, the reports, the warnings—but some owners will do whatever they want anyway. Skip the survey. Rush a yard period. Push the budget. Then the tech in the bridge fails, or a system explodes, and suddenly it’s “Why didn’t anyone tell me?” You did. They just didn’t care. And now it’s your problem 🧨
