RIChapter 9: Should i only buy untreated gems? Do clarity enhancements spoil a gem's colour? How will I know if my gemstone is treated? These are some of the questions I recently received. Let me attempt to answer below:
The necklace in this video is by @buccellatimilan & features cabochon cut rubies. When it comes to gems in jewellery, it's perfectly acceptable for the stones to be enhanced. Because otherwise the price will skyrocket.
BUT, if you'd like to use only untreated gemstones, then buy the stones separately, get them certified and provide them to a TRUSTED jeweller to set in a necklace. As long as the jeweller is able to use their own gold, diamonds, and charge you for their design & labour, this should be possible. The advantage of this scenario is not necessarily a lower cost but quality control. You'd be surprised to learn that many jewellery designers will happily create a custom piece for you with the centre-stone or a collection of stones from your personal vault.
What do I do? I prefer untreated gems when it's a single stone or a pair. With collections for a necklace or a bracelet, I am happy to buy enhanced goods. With emeralds, I'll buy up up to minor oil (range being - no oil, insignificant, minor, moderate...) but no resin. With rubies & sapphires - I am happy with heated gems (no glass filling etc.). I also buy antique jewels.
But there are gems, which are (for the most part) not treated at all, such as spinels, garnets (tsavorite, spessartine). It's one of the many reasons I gravitate towards these two gem types.
How will I know if my gems are treated? Ask your jeweller & they'll tell you. In most cases, jewellers are happy to educate & answer questions, because they want to build a long term relationship. Ask them to get the jewel certified. The Gem & Jewellery export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has a wonderful lab in Jaipur you can use. In Singapore, I use Far East Gem Lab. In Bangkok, you have GIT, AIGS, ICA Gem Lab. Internationally, there is Gübelin, SSEF, GIA, AGL. In Colombia, you have the CDTEC lab. Google away & I am available to answer questions.
