🎬 Fact: One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961) — In this heartwarming scene where Pongo celebrates the birth of his 15 puppies, the animation carries a distinct “sketchy” look. This was the first Disney feature to use the Xerox process, which allowed animators’ original drawings to be transferred directly to cels, bypassing the traditional hand-inking stage and saving the studio from a massive financial crisis. To keep the characters’ spots consistent throughout the film, the production team had to track an incredible 6,469,952 spots across every frame. Pongo himself has exactly 72 spots, while Perdita has 68. The voice of Pongo was provided by Australian actor Rod Taylor, whom Walt Disney personally cast after being impressed by his “urbane and dashing” quality. Interestingly, the film features several subtle cameos from Lady and the Tramp characters during the “Twilight Bark” sequence, including Jock, Peg, and the title couple themselves.

Vintage Disney animation was created through a painstaking, frame-by-frame process known as cel animation.⁠ ⁠ Artists began by storyboarding the action and painting background art. ⁠ ⁠ Animators then hand-drew each movement of the character onto clear celluloid sheets, known as cels. ⁠ ⁠ After being hand-inked and painted, the cels were layered over the painted background and photographed one frame at a time. ⁠ ⁠ When played back in sequence, these frames created the illusion of motion, and a final musical score and sound effects were added to complete the cartoon.
