TOthis is ONE PART of the story. there are OTHER REASONS, namely: mechanical considerations for the actual sewing machines
loopers take up less space than bobbins and hooks, which allows for setups like feed arm machines with skinnier sewing beds and multiple needles. they also make the process more efficient since you can use cones for both sides, which saves time on bobbin changes.
also the added flex of a chainstitch can give seams a different character, like how a chainstitch jean hem will "rope", or twist around itself a little bit, after wash.
