Three Minute Mechanical Timer: powered by gravity the potential energy of the descending weighted mechanism is transferred to the kinetic energy of the drive train gears and balance wheel pendulum (and associated balance spring). This “mechanical hourglass” has some key features of any mechanical clock, most important for the regulation of movement is the escapement mechanism- the component with two prongs that only allows the escapement wheel to move forward one tooth per swing cycle of the balance wheel, and producing the characteristic “tick-tock” sound as the mechanism slowly descends down the sawtooth vertical spur rack. The Tipping Marble Clock ••• A clock that tells time with marbles. The crank-slider-rack-pinion mechanisms lifts the ball to the top where it rests on a tipping time segment. Each marble increments the time by 1. When the segment fills up, the whole thing tips dumping all the marbles down to the bottom except 1. The last marble drops down to the track segment below, indicating that 10 minutes have passed. At the top of the hour, the chain reaction happens again, this time with the middle segment emptying. This cause a marble to drop to the hours segment, causing that track to tip as well, resetting the clock back to 1:00. ••• This is a downloadable model that you can build yourself! Link is in bio. On another I have this most bizarre take on a deadbeat escapement courtesy of 20th Century Belgian manufacturers ‘Interclock’. It really is the sublime to the ridiculous sometimes, this job!
