AKCloudflare went down recently, and many sites like ChatGPT and Discord stopped loading — even though their servers were actually fine.
Cloudflare sits in the middle between you and the website.
It protects the site, manages traffic, and makes pages load faster.
Here are the main things it handles:
DDoS Protection : Blocks fake requests
Caching: Saves copies of your site for faster
loading
Firewall: Blocks bad/bot traffic
Routing: Chooses the fastest path for your
requests
So what caused the outage?
A database permission change created a wrong file inside Cloudflare’s Bot Management system.
The file became too large, and Cloudflare’s servers couldn’t load it - so the “middle layer” went down, and websites became unreachable.
