One of the things I love most about tree work is learning more about trees themselves - because I never understood how you could work with something you don’t really understand? I like sharing what I’m learning in real time, with curiosity rather than certainty. It’s fun, it helps me make sense of things, and like any scientific process, what I share is always a snapshot — ideas that will keep evolving with time and experience. Lately I’ve been thinking about CODIT. Even from day one, it struck me as a bit too simplistic. There are so many environmental and biological factors at play in tree responses. My background is in virology, immunology, and microbiology (in humans, not trees.), and while it’s a different system, there are definite parallels - both trees and people are complex, living organisms. So I can’t help but look at tree biology through that lens: questioning, comparing, and trying to understand what’s really going on. Dr Duncan Slater has been hugely inspiring on this path. He’s written a great summary on this — link below, but I know IG doesn’t do clickable links. Comment if you want more info and I’ll find a way to get it to you! He also pointed me to other brilliant researchers like Lynne Boddy, Rayner, and Schwartz. Given the right circumstances, trees have in their biology, the ability to self heal. The process of CODIT is an attribute of most trees. It is the, Compartmentalization Of Decay or Damage In Trees Damage to the outer bark or branches of a tree makes them susceptible to disease and pests. Just as we humans form a scab and new skin after a wound, trees do the same with their bark. They lock off the access to that open wound through the process of CODIT and slowly build a healthy callous to avoid any potential threats to the tree’s health. There were so many fun and interactive booths! I even got to enjoy a free photo shoot and try on traditional costumes. There were also travel guides and apps introducing Korea’s hidden gems. 🇰🇷 2️⃣ Engage with the speakers. The highlight of my visit was being able to ask direct questions to the panelists. I had the chance to talk to Ji Eun Chung, CEO of CODIT Corporation, who explained that many startups in Korea struggle due to limited access to data.
