Concorde’s tires were some of the most stressed components ever put on a commercial aircraft. At rotation, each tire had to survive speeds over 250 mph, extreme heat from friction, and massive loads during landing—all in just a few seconds. To handle this, Concorde used ultra-high-pressure tires (over 230 psi, nearly 6× a car tire) with reinforced construction to minimize deformation at speed.
But pushing the limits came with challenges. Tire bursts and debris damage became a serious concern, especially at such high takeoff speeds where aborting wasn’t always possible. These issues ultimately drove major safety upgrades, including stronger tires, runway inspections, and fuel tank protections.
Watching Concorde land reminds us: supersonic flight wasn’t just fast—it was engineering at the edge of what was possible.

In this footage from 2003, we see the legendary supersonic bird departing London Heathrow for one of its final journeys. While most commercial jets cruise at around 550 mph, the Concorde doubled that, hitting Mach 2.04—fast enough to get you from London to New York in under 3.5 hours.
It’s been over 20 years since it retired, and we still haven’t returned to these speeds in commercial aviation.

Le Concorde volait à Mach 2, soit 2 200 km/h. À 18 000 mètres d’altitude, ses passagers voyaient la courbure de la Terre. Il était tellement rapide qu’on arrivait à New York avant l’heure à laquelle on était parti de Paris.
Seuls 20 exemplaires ont été construits. Un billet coûtait 8 000 euros l’aller-retour. Il brûlait 25 600 litres de kérosène par heure, trois fois plus qu’un Boeing 747.
Le 25 juillet 2000, une lamelle de métal de 43 cm sur la piste a tout changé. 113 morts. Et en 2003, le Concorde a été retiré pour toujours.
