BOPlaying Mozart's Figaro ouverture on double bass can feel like “fingero”- a real fingering nightmare! 😅
With standard Simandl fingerings, passages like this become extremely difficult. Simandl method is fantastic for most repertoire, but here it really reaches its limits.
In this clip I’m using an extended technique where each finger covers one semitone. This gives the left hand a three-semitone span instead of the usual two, and suddenly the passage becomes much more playable. 🎶
What you can’t clearly see on video: the hand and arm adjust to a slightly different angle, and the thumb sits on the outer edge of the neck, index finger is stretched the most of all (there is a few more details, but full explanation wouldn't fit to the caption).
This setup makes the fingers very stable and helps keep intonation clean—even in the lowest positions.
The video is excerpt from a lesson with a very talented and advanced student, who already handles extended positions confidently. Before teaching this approach, I always make sure the traditional Simandl technique is rock-solid. Players who learned the Italian 1-3-4 system before Simandl 1-2-4 would adapt the fastest, since they already have good independence in all four fingers.
If you’re exploring extended positions: take your time, stay relaxed, and let the hand shape adjust naturally. It pays off! 🎻✨
