Want a quick date pitting tip? Use boning pliers! It’s a fast & easy way to remove the date seeds or pits without having to cut the dates open (keeps fingers clean too!). I get asked from time to time if it’s better to pit your dates when you receive them. Personally I believe the pits preserve the moisture in the date, which is something we value. If you wanted to pit them all at once store the fruit in your freezer until you use them. Another question I’ve received is about missing pits. This happens naturally - like other stone fruit the date seed is connected to the palm tree itself. The cap you may notice on the top of the date (or perianth) connects to the seed inside and the woody fruit stalk of the palm. When the ripened dates are jostled free during harvest sometimes the seed stays connected to the fruit arm. Most people don’t realise mould can grow inside medjool dates 👀 I’ve been eating dates for years and this is the first time I’ve seen this, but consider this your friendly PSA to always cut them open before eating! Dates are naturally high in sugar and moisture, which creates the perfect environment for mould to grow.
Most dates are completely fine, especially when stored correctly (cool, dry, airtight… I keep mine in the fridge). But make sure you open them up and check for: • Black or dark grey patches
• A powdery or dusty residue
• A musty smell
• Any “puff” of dark dust when opened If you see any of the above, it goes straight in the bin! Black mould is pretty toxic and if consumed can lead to respiratory problems, allergic reactions and other health issues. But, dates are described as cooling and Ojas increasing foods per Ayurveda. Dates are sweet and astringent with cold and heavy qualities which make them difficult to digest if consumed as whole on daily basis. It dampens our Agni 🔥 ✳️Soaking dates for few hrs could help with reducing heaviness and aid in digesting them better. Pinch of dry ginger on top can turn them warm and makes it easier to digest. Technically a summer drink called ‘kharjuradhi mantha’ dates, raisins and figs are used to make a traditional seasonal drink. It is a cooling and hydrating drink for summer. Dates are balancing for pitta prakruthi folks and work well for vata due to their heaviness. They should be avoided by Kapha folks as it can aggravate it. Dates are Ojas improving and aid in enhancing iron levels. They are good for gaining weight and nourish you well .
