We’ve all looked at the coop and thought, “It’s fine... right?” 😅🧹 Be honest, you’ve definitely said this before when putting off a coop clean-out! While the deep litter method is fantastic, denial doesn’t work. You have to know what to look out for to keep your flock healthy. The Rule of Thumb: If it smells like ammonia, feels damp, or you see mold, it is time to change it out! Chickens rely on dry, breathable bedding to protect their feet and respiratory systems. Be honest... when was the last time you changed your coop bedding? 👀👇 #chickencoop #backyardchickens #homesteading #deeplittermethod #chickenkeeping

I know I’m talking about mistakes but the coop in the video doesn’t actually have any of these mistakes but they are common ones I see! Chicken keeping is pretty simple… but there are a few chicken coop mistakes I see all the time that can make things harder than they need to be. 🐓 ❌ Roosting bars installed wrong Skinny bars or round dowels don’t let chickens cover their toes at night, which can lead to frostbite. A wide, flat roost (like a 2x4 installed flat) lets them sit comfortably and keep their feet warm. Also, we love to make all of our roosting bars/ladders removable! This makes things easy for cleaning. ❌ Too many nesting boxes You don’t need one box per chicken. A good rule of thumb is 1 nesting box for every 4–5 hens. Even then… they’ll usually all choose the same 1–2 favorite boxes anyway. So if you have 20 hens you don’t need 15 boxes 😉 ❌ Not enough ventilation Good airflow removes moisture and ammonia from droppings, helping keep the coop dry and reducing respiratory issues and frostbite in winter. Plus, good ventilation typically means good natural light which is also great to have too! ❌ Chicken wire instead of hardware cloth Chicken wire keeps chickens in, but it won’t keep predators out. Hardware cloth is a much safer option to protect your flock. ❌ No easy access for cleaning If a coop is hard to clean, it won’t get cleaned as often. Large access doors make a huge difference. Our coops have drop-down clean-out doors to make the job quick and easy. ✅A well-designed coop makes chicken keeping so much easier. 🛠️If you’re thinking about upgrading your setup, we offer ready-to-use coops and DIY plans. If you’re thinking about building a coop for a lot of chickens, here’s my opinion… Build a walk-in coop. Ground level. Not just for egg-collecting reasons, but for extra space for the chickens, for easier access when cleaning, or getting to a broody hen… and probably more reasons than I can even think to name. I love my chicken coop. I love that it’s safe, comfortable, and predator-proof. I love the brooder basement under the hen house. There are plenty of things to love about it — don’t get me wrong. Buuuut… our next coop will be ground level, with a walk-in feed room section to store feed and bedding for sure. The brooder basement will just go inside 😉 I’m not here to sugarcoat 💩 or act like I have it all figured out and perfect. Because trust me, y’all… I DON’T. I’m here to keep it real and show you how rewarding the hard work we put in around here really is. Follow along 🩶

Honestly, it depends on a lot of factors. As you start setting up your coop, ask yourself first: • what kind of coop would best suit your needs? • what size is the coop? Walk in? • what would clean up look like, is it accessible? • what weather is common in your area? • what kind of climate do you have and what do your seasons look like? • what tools will you need? People in colder climates can usually set up deep bedding systems that will allow them to create sort of a natural warm environment for their chickens, and when done properly would not smell. Others use hemp, and others use sand like I do. Sand for me works better because you can scoop it like kitty litter and makes cleaning easier but it is also super quick to dry and can keep the environment drier than usual. What environments mean there’s more possibility to bacteria. One of the reasons I’ve seen so many other chicken owners torn about how often to clean the coop is that some believe chickens need to fully live in their environment to build up immunity while others want to keep the environment clean to also help limit how often chickens get sick and I honestly think it’s a balance of both. We should allow situations and environments where our chickens are able to build immunity naturally, but we should also try to set them up for success by preparing for certain illnesses that are common toward chickens. I highly recommend these two books for new chicken owners: The Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow Chicken Health for Dummies by Julie Gauthier #backyardchickens

Raising chickens is a dirty job. They poop an unholy amount. I am a busy girl and needed to find a way to limit how much time I spent in the coop cleaning. This saving time and money! The birds roost on some bars I made out of 2x4s and the poop was mostly just a mountain underneath those bars. So I stapled up some plastic sheeting, just cheap painters plastic, under the bars to catch the poo! The end on the left is left unstapled. Once a week I just put a bucket on that end and scoop the poop canyon right into a bucket. Once a month or so I change the whole plastic out. This has cut my need for cleaning and fresh shavings 10 fold. It’s also a huge help in keeping the eggs cleaner! So here’s a quick peek for all my fellow chicken tenders in case you wanna give it a try! Say hi to ducky!
