SHMadhubala, originally named Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi, was born on February 14, 1933, in Delhi, India. Her family relocated to Bombay after her father lost his job in Peshawar in a tobacco company, and it was there that Madhubala’s journey in the film industry began. Even as a child, she displayed remarkable talent in singing and dancing, which caught the attention of filmmakers. At the tender age of nine, she made her debut in the film “Basant” (1942), marking the beginning of her illustrious career.
Renamed Madhubala by the renowned producer Devika Rani, she quickly rose to prominence. She became the main financial support for her large family.
She loved wearing plain white sarees. At home she’d wear maxis with mogras in her hair. Madhubala, who had learnt to drive at the age of 12, had a collection of swanky cars which included Hillman, Buick, and Station Wagon.
She famously fell in love with Dilip Kumar, her co-star in several films includin”Tarana” (1951). Their relationship captured public imagination but ultimately did not culminate in marriage.
In 1960, Madhubala married Kishore Kumar, a noted Indian playback singer and actor. Soon she was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition known as Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). Despite medical advice to rest, Madhubala continued to work.
Madhubala’s career was marked by memorable performances in iconic films such as “Neel Kamal” (1947), “Amar Prem” (1948), “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958), and “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960), where she portrayed the legendary Anarkali. Her beauty and talent garnered international recognition, with Hollywood taking notice of her allure and charisma.
In her final years, Madhubala battled deteriorating health, eventually succumbing to her illness on February 23, 1969, in Bombay. Her contributions to Indian cinema earned her titles like “The Venus of Indian Cinema” and “The Marilyn Monroe of Bollywood”. Despite her short life, Madhubala remains an enduring icon of Indian cinema, celebrated for her beauty, talent, and tragic story.
