AKMaybe the screens aren’t inherently the problem, maybe it’s how you choose to use them. My children ask for my phone so that they can add new birds to Merlin. If your children are used to playing fruit ninja or other games for hours, start with apps like Simply Piano. Next, add an app like Procreate.
Don’t just download the app and expect them to use, though. Empower them to use it by enrolling them in lessons or showing them YouTube videos. It’s no fun when you have something good but don’t know how to use it. After some time they’ll be able to teach themselves.
Merlin Bird ID, which is powered by Ebird, is one of my favorite apps that people normally don’t think to use with their children. We started using it about three years ago, when I wanted to encourage my children to slow down and observe the world. They became so observant, that one day my daughter pointed out an owl in a distant tree as we drove along the road. We turned around and were able to get a nice shot before it flew away.
Be mindful, there are so many apps that will pour education into your child!

FUAI is not going away. Kids need to learn how to use it as a tool instead of being forced to pretend it doesn’t exist.
Prompting AI is a life skill that we value at our schools- it can literally supercharge a student’s ability. In this example, Aheli was able to vibe code an app by prompting AI. This is something that used to take years to learn, and is now at the fingertips of students with a very low barrier to entry.
Aheli switched to our school from a top public school, where she wasn’t allowed to use AI in any capacity. Now, she’s leveraged its abilities to build her own app, improve her public speaking skills, and fast track her academic growth. 🚀
