Cindy found this MONSTER fly here at @manu.biostation last night with @taniaawa @angesotoc. I didn’t even know flies could get this huge! Turns out there’s a weird family of tropical flies called Pantophthalmidae, sometimes known as timber flies. They are most closely related to soldier flies, and although they look like Tabanids (horse flies), they actually are not that closely related to them. They have an unusual trait: the larvae eat wood, which is very rare for Dipterans. They adults dont feed at all! This one is a female. She doesn’t bite or sting, totally harmless, and she let me hold her and pet her with no problem. I love these flies! It’s pretty easy to see how these large-flying insects have mistakenly been labeled “giant mosquitoes.” Although both mosquitoes and crane flies are true flies (Diptera), their diets are entirely different. Unlike female blood-sucking mosquitoes, crane flies, both the males and females, don’t consume blood at all. Their mouthparts don’t possess the necessary functions to do that. Instead, many species feed very little on nectar and pollen, while other species don’t feed at all. Crane flies also have a very short lifespan as adults. Some species can live around 2 weeks, while others can live as short as just 5 days after maturing! Crane flies often get called by yet another misleading name, “mosquito eater.” It should come as no surprise that these insects are incapable of eating mosquitoes, yet alone any live prey for that matter. With crane flies being mostly defenseless, they’re sought after as an easy meal by various types of predators, such as birds, reptiles, and spiders.⁣ ⁣ #Jesus #insects #cranefly #bug #entomology

En bilinen cinsleri Anopheles, Aedes ve Culex’tir. Bu küçük, zarif görünümlü böcekler aslında ekosistem açısından oldukça önemli bir yere sahiptir; birçok balık, kurbağa ve böcek larvası için besin kaynağıdırlar. Ancak aynı zamanda insanlık tarihindeki en ölümcül hastalık vektörlerinden biridirler. ▪︎Sivrisinekler tam başkalaşım geçirir: yumurta → larva → pupa → erişkin (imago). Bu mikroorganizmalar sivrisineğin tükürük bezlerine göç eder ve orada çoğalır.
